Why Credit Unions Remain a Steady Signal in a Noisy World

When most people think about financial institutions, they think about accounts, loans, and transactions.

But credit unions have always been about something more.

On International Credit Union (ICU) Day®, Oct 15, 2026, we’re celebrating a philosophy that has guided credit unions for generations: people helping people. Credit unions around the world come together each year to recognize the impact cooperative finance has on individuals, families, and communities. ICU Day has been celebrated on the third Thursday of October since 1948.

What makes credit unions different starts with who they serve.

Unlike traditional for-profit financial institutions, credit unions are owned by their members. That means the focus is not on shareholders but on helping members achieve their financial goals and building stronger communities along the way.

At Park, we see that impact every day.

It’s the first-time homebuyer who receives guidance throughout the mortgage process. It’s the family building savings for the future. It’s the individual working to establish credit or improve financial well-being. It’s the local organizations, schools, and community partners working to create opportunities where they’re needed most.

These moments may look different, but they all share a common thread: people helping people.

This year’s ICU Day theme, “Cooperative Finance: A Steady Signal in a Noisy World,” is a reminder that relationships still matter. In a world filled with financial options, changing economic conditions, and constant information, credit unions remain focused on serving members with trusted guidance and a commitment to helping them succeed.

For us, that commitment aligns closely with our mission to build thriving communities together, through financial inclusion and empowering underserved communities.

Today, we’re proud to celebrate the global credit union movement and recognize our members, Park team members, and community partners who make our work possible.

Happy International Credit Union Day!
